The Montessori method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, recognised as being one of the most influential educators of the 20th century. Montessori was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome medical school and through her work as a doctor and working with children who would now be diagnosed with specific learning difficulties she became interested in education and how children learn.
Montessori opened schools in Rome and it was in these schools and in the classroom that she began to develop the Montessori method, aimed at helping children reach their full potential.
She travelled the world, writing articles and lecturing on her discoveries and established schools worldwide. She developed an extremely effective method of teaching having recognised that children learn best by playing and ‘doing’ and that if a child is self-motivated they will become more confident and more successful little learners. She designed a whole series of resources to help children become independent learners with a love of learning – these resources can be found in all Montessori nurseries.
